Area X is a mystery that has puzzled scientists and authorities for decades. Previous expeditions ended in suicides, violence, and fatal diseases. Now, a small group of women is sent to investigate and document what they find. The biologist, our narrator, is an introspective woman marked by a failed marriage and the loss of her husband, who was part of a previous expedition that returned deeply changed.

As they enter Area X, the group encounters a lush yet unsettling landscape, realizing they’ve completely lost track of time. They soon discover an underground structure that the biologist calls a “tower,” while the others see it as a tunnel. Inside, they find bioluminescent inscriptions on the walls made of an unknown organic substance. When the biologist comes into contact with this substance, she starts noticing changes in her perception and behavior.

As they move forward, distrust grows among the members. The psychologist uses hypnosis techniques to control the group, revealing hidden secrets and intentions. The anthropologist mysteriously disappears, ramping up the tension. The biologist discovers that the psychologist knew more about the dangers of Area X than she had let on, including the presence of a creature known as the “Crawler,” responsible for the inscriptions in the tower.

Isolated and determined to uncover the truth, the biologist explores Area X alone. She finds evidence that the region has properties that alter the biology and minds of living beings. Her own transformation leads her to question her identity and sanity. In the end, she decides to stay in Area X, searching for answers about her husband’s fate and the mysteries surrounding the place.

“Annihilation” is the first book in the Southern Reach trilogy, written by Jeff VanderMeer. The narrative follows the twelfth expedition to the mysterious Area X, an isolated region of the world where nature has taken over and inexplicable phenomena occur. The group consists of four women: a biologist (the story’s narrator), an anthropologist, a surveyor, and a psychologist, who is the mission’s leader. Without personal names, they represent their functions, emphasizing the impersonal nature of the expedition.

“Annihilation” was adapted into a movie in 2018, directed by Alex Garland and starring Natalie Portman as the biologist. The film received praise for its atmosphere and visuals, although it has significant differences from the book.
